the journey of Covenant Children’s Home…

Covenant Orphanage, originally established by a young lady from Casper, WY, has undergone significant changes in recent years. Following the founder's inability to sustain operations, the ministry was transferred to Horizon, Int’l. However, last summer, Horizon ceased its presence in Uganda, prompting the orphanage's leadership to intensify their efforts to ensure the welfare of the children under their care.

A year ago, Covenant housed around 100 HIV positive orphans. With the cessation of Horizon's child sponsorship program causing financial strain on external caregivers, many additional orphans were brought to Covenant by relatives who could no longer afford their care.

In response to the withdrawal of Horizon Int'l from Uganda in July 2023, leaving hundreds of orphans and caregivers without support, including essential supplies like food and medications, Don and Debi Bergstrom embarked on a journey of prayer and action. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit, biblical commands, and the support of loved ones, they initiated the formation of a 501c3 nonprofit ministry through startchurch.com. The Board members, including the Bergstroms, serve on a voluntary basis without receiving any compensation.

As of our visit in March 2024, the home now accommodates 184 children, reflecting the growing need for such a refuge.

Moreover, the orphanage's premises also host an Elementary School and a church, serving as a vital hub for the community with approximately 400 individuals gathering for worship weekly.

The dedication of the staff and supporters at Covenant Orphanage continues to be a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Uganda.
